Responsibilities Fiber Technician duties and responsibilities are as follows: This position is responsible for the proper operation of a group of Network Elements and approximately 175 miles of outside plant fiber plant. Duties in support of interdepartmental objectives, to include preventative and remedial maintenance, installation, optimization, building and ground upkeep, and integration of network hardware and interconnect facilities. Other responsibilities include maintaining and repairing all optical equipment and transmitters; maintaining site and test equipment inventories; testing and analyzing the network to ensure contiguous communication and network integrity and quality; updating daily logs with site-specific information; composing clear and concise reports for system documentation; and performing audits as required by local, regional, Area, Corporate or Regulatory agencies. The Cell Technician – Fiber is expected to be able to perform his duties with little supervision, and participate in cross-functional projects as scheduled. The fiber technician will diligently work to care for and improve the Verizon Wireless transport network consisting of outside and inside fiber-optic cable plant, Point of Presence (POP) sites and supporting DWDM, SONET and Ethernet facilities equipment located in POP, MSC, and Cell Site locations. The fiber technician takes a proactive role in preventing intrusions into our network of outside plant by actively investigating locate requests, interfacing with contractors doing excavation or construction in the vicinity of our plant, looking for rogue contractors by regularly surveying the fiber route, and properly marking locate requests that have the potential to be in conflict with our fiber plant. The fiber technician will perform maintenance routines on both the physical and communications facilities, regularly gather and analyze operational measurements from communications systems, and troubleshoot and facilitate repair of both fiber and equipment, working with other groups or organizations as required to ensure the high availability of transport circuits. This technician will support the Moundridge and Topeka KS area. The technician must either live in the area or demonstrate their intention to relocate there (no relocation assistance is being provided).
