Co-op Program: 6 Month Commitment (January - June 2020), Full Time, 40 Hours/Week

Job Description

The co-op role is based within the solid-state analytical group of Analytical Development (AD) department which is a multidisciplinary group within Pharmaceutical Sciences. The solid-state analytical group play a critical role in characterizing solid materials in processes to optimize exposure and pharmacokinetic profiles of our drug products (oral, IV, or specialized), in support of early discovery to late-development programs.

The co-op will join a group to support pharmaceutical product with a variety of solid state and physicochemical techniques including X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, laser light scattering, surface area measurement, optical/electron microscopy and chromatography among the others. The importance of specific experience with any particular technique is secondary to the importance of the individual's ability to generate consistently high quality characterization data and maintain associated written records in a timely manner. There are great opportunities to get involved in discovery and critical characterization of Vertex drug substance, starting materials, intermediate and drug products (non-clinical and clinical) with regards to physical stability, thermodynamic/kinetic relationships of solid forms in chemical processes, 3-D structure elucidation through single crystal and/or crystalline powder structure determinations, comprehensive polymorph screens, and form selection.

The main role and responsibilities include the following:
  • Generate physicochemical characterization data to support chemical and pharmaceutical process development and drug substance, drug product release and stability.
  • Manage sample receipt, document experiments according to Vertex procedures and report results.
  • Record experiments and results in laboratory notebooks in sufficient detail and in a timely fashion


  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate majoring in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field as a sophomore or above
  • Completed Physical Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry coursework
  • Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating in Spring 2020
  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA
  • Legally eligible to work onsite

Preferred Qualifications
  • Physical/analytical chemistry laboratory experience
  • Comfortable using a PC computer and proficient in Windows-based operating systems and basic applications; spreadsheets and databases
  • Strong experience with operating scientific instruments
  • Attention to detail, flexibility and ability to manage multiple activities to expected deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to interact cross functionally
  • Strong analytical capabilities and problem solving skills
  • Strong work ethic and tenacity
  • Willing to take initiative in pursuit of project goals
