Co-op, Discovery Biology

The Vertex Co-Op Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. Co-op Program: 6 Month Commitment (January - June 2020), Full Time, 40 Hours/Week

Job Description:
The Discovery Biology group is focused on understanding the biology of the diseases that Vertex is interested in and developing assays to interrogate possible therapeutics for those diseases. For this position, you will work alongside an interdisciplinary research team investigating the development of novel therapies for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and other hemoglobin-related human diseases.

Key Responsibilities:
As a co-op student, you will be conducting research in low throughput formats to investigate hypotheses driven by both small molecule efforts and genetic screening. Essential duties will include execution of assays to validate and confirm modulators of fetal hemoglobin. By the end of the co-op, the student should be able to execute a differentiation experiment of hematopoietic (blood) cells with genetic knockout and/or compound treatment and report its effects on fetal hemoglobin up-regulation. In order to do this, the co-op will be required to perform the following tasks
  • Maintenance of cell lines
  • Implementation of a variety of cellular and molecular biology techniques
  • Flow cytometry
  • Gene editing

Qualification:

  • 3 years of college with a major in Chemical Biology, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in pipetting
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • One prior laboratory research experience (either member of a research lab or a curriculum laboratory course)
  • Desire to join a cross-matrixed, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research team in an industrial setting
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior tissue culture experience
  • Familiarity with laboratory notebook maintenance
  • Interest in blood related research
